Frequently Asked Questions - Child and Teen Therapy
Starting therapy can come with a lot of questions. We want getting started with Trailhead to feel simple and comfortable. Below are answers to some of the questions families commonly have about our services.
-
Trailhead Integrated Services provides behavioral health services for children, adolescents, and families. Our therapists work with clients experiencing a variety of emotional, behavioral, relational, and life challenges.
-
Our therapists can support children, teens, and families with concerns such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, behavioral challenges, emotional regulation, family conflict, school-related stress, self-esteem, life transitions, and other mental health needs.
Because every therapist has different areas of experience and interest, we work to match each client with a clinician who is appropriate for their individual needs.
-
You can request an appointment through our online referral form or call Trailhead at 304-850-8850.

-
In most cases, you can contact Trailhead directly to request outpatient therapy. Some insurance plans or specific programs may have additional requirements. Our staff can help you determine what is needed for your coverage.
-
The first appointment is generally an assessment. Your therapist will spend time learning about the concerns that brought you to therapy, relevant history, strengths, current needs, and goals for treatment.
For children and adolescents, the therapist may meet with the parent or guardian as part of the assessment process.
From there, you and your therapist will work together to develop an individualized treatment plan.
-
Most individual therapy appointments are approximately 45–60 minutes, although appointment length may vary depending on the service, age of the client, clinical need, and treatment plan.
-
Many clients begin with weekly appointments, but there is no single schedule that is right for everyone. Frequency is determined based on clinical needs, treatment goals, progress, and recommendations from the treating therapist.
-
Yes. Parent and caregiver involvement can be an important part of treatment for children and adolescents.
The amount and type of involvement will depend on the child's age, needs, treatment goals, and clinical circumstances. Your therapist will discuss what involvement is appropriate while also maintaining necessary therapeutic boundaries and confidentiality.
-
Therapy works best when children and teens have an appropriate level of privacy with their therapist. At the same time, parents and guardians remain important members of the treatment process.
Your therapist will explain confidentiality and its limits at the beginning of treatment, including circumstances involving safety concerns or situations in which disclosure is required by law.
-
Yes! All trailhead clinicians can provide play therapy. Our clinical director is a registered play therapist supervisor, and all clinicians are trained in play therapy techniques. Our clinicians may incorporate developmentally appropriate play, expressive activities, games, art, and other therapeutic techniques when appropriate for the child's age, needs, and treatment goals.
Specific approaches vary based on the training and qualifications of each clinician.
